Walking around Austin for several days, whether it be along 6th Street, 4th Street or in one of the many clubs or bars, I kept having this recurring thought.
Why is everyone here 12?
Why does everyone here seem to smoke?
Why is everyone here 12?
Why does everyone here seem to smoke?
And then: when did 18 start to look like 12?
There are some fabulous restaurants however, including an overpriced but fresh sushi joint called
Kenichi on 5th and a boat load of infamous barbeque places scattered throughout the city.

The first few gigs tonight
in Austin were fairly standard for technology industry events……meet-and-greet, a little food, sponsored bar tab and a few press and bloggers running around snapping photos and talking about their projects.
Then it all changed……once I entered the world of film makers, producers and other ‘right brain’ creators.
The bars in Austin are what I would describe as
“venue mash-ups;” a mash of nearly everything…….from the contrasts between one waiters’ fashion style and another, to the paintings on the walls, to the music from one hour to the next, to the flooring, tables, the bouncer at the door or the bartender’s jokes.
It’s also a young town, not unlike a lot of university towns, and oh so wild and loud along 6th on a Friday night. Is it always like this on weekends or is it a pre-SXSW thing? Tattoo shops along side cigar stores, which sit along side southwestern bars playing non-southwestern music. They sit beside a retro diner and a bank with a funky ghost town-like sign.
In front of all of this color energy are two policemen sitting on top of horses starring at the crowds, as if waiting for chaos…

I’ve been hosting and attending women’s clothing swaps for years. Men don’t have rituals that come anywhere close to a clothing swap, a place where women gather, exchange clothes, shoes, accessories, wine, food, and stories from childhood to present day. It’s a fabulous excuse to connect — something women love to do.
The main difference between east and west coast swaps is the amount of color. New England exchanges tend to be full of greens, browns and blacks. On the west coast, it’s an entirely different story:
Mass High Tech is
having a reception on March 9 to launch their Re-Design Networking Reception. It will be held at Mass High Tech, 160 Federal Street, 12th Floor in Boston.
TED is over but I can’t seem to get enough of the ‘stories’ from this year’s event. Where else do you engage with
Rick Warren,
Tony Robbins,
Meg Ryan, Al Gore,
Peter Gabriel, Thomas Dolby,
Juan Enriquez, Robert Wright and
Bill Joy in the same day?
I was thrilled to see Rick Warren on the schedule although I discovered (not to my surprise), that most people while they actually found his talk engaging and inspiring, only seemed had a problem with his references to ‘God.’
Having dabbled in more religions and belief systems than I can count on both hands, it doesn’t phase me. I had to laugh however at how many people had an ‘issue with it.’ Of course he’s going to reference God –
he’s a pastor. It would be like asking an accountant to avoid the word spreadsheet or telling the builder to leave his hammer at home.
Dan Dennett followed Warren on the TED stage and while he was respectful of him personally, he had several issues with Warren’s book. Dennett tried to discount parts of it by extracting various…

Prior to the
Children of Uganda entering the
