Ever had that thought that one day you’d retire, get out of the rat race and open up a quaint B&B somewhere? John and Prudy left ‘corporate life’ to do precisely that in the center of quaint Taos New Mexico.
Meet Dreamcatcher B&B, which they now run while on the side do community work and dabble in cooking, including scrumptious breakfast dishes for their guests. I got the feeling that John was mighty proud of his Hot Oats Brulee and Savory Pancakes.
Dreamcatcher was the only B&B we stayed in on our long haul across America this past January, largely because we were more focused on resorts and hotels, as we were considering both cross country trip stays and family travel for our coverage. What a welcome retreat to arrive in charming Taos, the only stop on our long journey that greeted us with snow.
Considering that skiing was on the agenda, we were happy to see the powderdy white stuff hit the ground, but also grateful that we didn’t get creamed before we reached Taos given how much gear we had piled into our Yakima cargo rack.
The adobe-style property was sectioned off around the property — the main house, where they lived, was joined to a few of the rooms while others filled a second building, separated by a charming walkway. Red chilies hung from the ceilings outside as flickering snowflakes came down upon us as we pulled in.
The backyard was coated in white from fresh fallen snow, a lovely site despite the chill in the air. I imagined how equally lovely the yard was in the summer and fall when the weather would be warm enough to sit on the bench and take in a good book while the birds did the same in the nearby trees. Apparently there’s also a hammock in the yard during warmer months.
Each of the Dreamcatcher’s seven guest rooms are unique, but all with a lovely southwestern flare. In other words, they’re vibrant and colorful, while also intimate and cosy, in-room kiva fireplaces calling you to them for that late night cuppa tea or hot chocolate. Our room below was joined by a second room, with a bathroom (a fun red painted one) that separated the two rooms, making it a perfect choice for families.

The main house is also a lovely area to relax — they have a couch and hot water for tea should you crave one after hours. From their location, it’s a short drive to the Taos Pueblo, shops, art galleries, museums and restaurants in town (they have some great choices in Taos). We used it as a base to explore for a few days before heading north via the High Road to the ski resort.
We took a liking to adorable Jake, their “greeter” dog, who is an integral part of the property and loves to pose for the camera.
Prudy pays attention to the fine details, always a major plus for any property and something too many miss in the hospitality industry. Breakfast is delicious, but it’s also happily presented and so colorful, you want to admire it for awhile before you dive in. She also has items for sale on-site and a collection of recipes that they share – some can be found on their site at www.dreambb.com, where you can also get a peak at their guest rooms, read about the amenities and make a reservation.
Two thumbs up!! We’d definitely return — it was a great base for in and around Taos activities and we loved the warmth and authenticity of our hosts.
