David Foster is the kind of songwriter that you don’t see much of anymore. He’s made some iconic records and produced even more. Although his music does tend to fall into the mainstream shlock category, there is no doubt that David Foster has been amzingly effective at reaching people; Counting millions of records sold and countless radio hits.

He was recently honored by BMI for being old and successful and he took a few moments to give his top 10 tips for songwriters. Watch it below.

Don’t get married
Play an instrument
Don’t be too precious for your craft
Be genuinely happy for others’ success
Phone people back
If your name is going on it make sure you give it everything you have
Be on time
Make every creative decision as if you had millions in the bank
Save your money
