The Dutch always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else when it comes to transport. It doesn’t need to be said that they do bikes better than everyone else, they have masses of well-designed bike lanes and they even have heated bike lanes for the snowy months.
And now they’ve gone and made their roads better as well.
New designs on trial this year use the sun to ‘charge up’ the paint road markings so they shine for up to 10 hours at night.
They also display ice signals when the weather drops below zero to warn and remind drivers to be careful on frozen roads.
Lights on the side of the road switch on when cars approach and dim as you pass by to save energy and small flower-shaped windmill lights are powered by the breeze of cars driving past.
Coolest of all, there will be induction priority lanes for electric cars. This basically means that they charge up the vehicles as they drive along it.
I think it’s time to move to Holland.
