Ireland is blessed with a mild and temperate climate, making it a plantsman’s joy enabling gardeners to grow a wide variety of plants and shrubs from all over the world. We are the envy of gardeners from many countries.
North of the island is County Antrim, an area steeped in history and laden with beauty such as the Giants Causeway & the Glens of Antrim. The gardens of the county are similarly endowed and contain some of the first gardens in Ireland. The terraces of the first ornamental garden in Ireland are still visible at Dunluce Castle near the Giants Causeway. Other early gardens include Lisburn Castle Garden, Glenarm Estate Walled Garden, Benvarden Garden and Antrim Castle Gardens.
County Antrim also contains gardens of more recent birth and of different interest, such as those at Ballyrobert Cottage Garden and Margaret Glynns garden in Ballymena.
The Antrim Garden Trail website consists of some of Ireland’s most distinguished public & private gardens – some of them world famous and others secret gems, whose discovery has been the highlight of many a Garden Tour.
The owners of these gardens would like to welcome groups and members of the public to share their enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, their plants and designs. At the same time the owners would like visitors to see them at their best.
The Antrim Garden Trail website exists to assist individual visitors as well as group organizers by suggesting itineraries and, when necessary, booking the individual gardens. Many of the gardens facilitiate visitors just dropping in, however for large groups it is often necessary to book in advance. Organizers should specify any particular interests for their group so that the most appropriate gardens can be suggested.
In some cases house tours and/or tea, coffee and home-made fare, can be arranged at an additional charge. (See individual pages for details).
Entry rates for each garden can be found on the individual pages and payments are normally made to the garden owners at the time of the visit. Some of the gardens are open to the public with specific opening days and times, whilst others are open by appointment. All the information relating to opening times, contact details and location for the gardens can be accessed on the individual garden webpage or by contacting the gardens by telephone.
