The Return of the Burger

Comments Off on The Return of the Burger

The last time I craved a burger was in October and before that, quite possibly years. While still an all-American habit, I have not regularly indulged in burgers since childhood. As I made my way out of San Francisco for what became a 7.5 hour drive to Lake Tahoe (normally takes about 3.5 apparently), the hamburger craving started.

Unlike the moments of reflection I experienced when I succumbed to an A&W burger nine months ago, the craving wasn’t about reliving childhood for a ‘moment in time,’ nor was it a ‘fix’ in the midst of a major life transition, yet it was every bit about comfort and small town charm where things are simple.

I discovered a quaint diner called Wagon Train Coffee Shop in Truckee, not far from my final destination. I had a remarkable waitress who at 22 is back home and now married after finishing college in Chicago. I learn that she loves to write. How could I not say “Blog girl, blog.” It’s such a great way to get started and determine what really inspires you at the tips of your fingers.

So yes, I had a burger — all with positive reinforcement as I chatted with her in this historic and authentic diner in this rural town not far from Tahoe. Alas, the burger lives on.
