E8: The Universal Theory of Everything?

The mathematical/geometric structure called E8, some scientists now believe, might constitute the deepest structure of reality — it is a contender with string theory as a universal “theory of everything”. Whether E8 turns out to be it or not, it is an incredibly beautiful structure — here it is, painstakingly built with thread anchored to pins (each of the 248 pins is a different sub-atomic particle, with 22 of them as yet unobserved).
