When planning your Labor Day excursions, midwesterners might want to consider a stop at the 17th annual Rib America Festival in Military Park, downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.

Some of the barbecue vendors offering “best of the best” ribs are Smokin’ Joe’s Hog Wild BBQ, Sgt. Oink’s BBQ, Pigfoot BBQ, Chicago BBQ and Squealer’s BBQ.

And then there’s the music. Headliners include George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Tesla, Moe and Cheap Trick.

The event is all four days of the end-of-summer weekend: August 31 through September 3, 2012. Admission is FREE before 5 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday (it’s $7 after those hours). Children 12 and under receive free admission at all times.
